Two oval diamonds with the same carat weight can look very different. One may be softly rounded; another may be long and slender. What Causes the Bow-Tie Effect?

Can Ratio Predict the Bow Tie?

No. More elongated ovals may sometimes show stronger bow-tie effects, but a ratio does not describe the facet arrangement, pavilion geometry or how the diamond responds to a viewer and the surrounding light. Ovals with the same ratio can have very different center patterns.

Use ratio to narrow your preferred silhouette. Use video or in-person observation to judge the bow tie and overall light pattern. Do not reject an attractive oval merely because its ratio falls outside a popular range, and do not approve one solely because the ratio sits inside it.

Why a Grading Report Is Not Enough

A report is essential for confirming measurements, carat weight, color, clarity and finish information. It is not a substitute for seeing the diamond. GIA currently assigns an overall cut grade only to standard round brilliant diamonds, not to oval fancy shapes. Polish and symmetry may be reported for an oval, but those finish grades do not fully describe face-up brightness, contrast or bow-tie behavior.

How to Evaluate an Oval in Photos and Video

Use a repeatable process:

  1. Start face-up. Check the overall outline, shoulders and symmetry before focusing on a single dark area.
  2. Watch movement. Ask for a slow tilt from side to side and front to back. Healthy contrast should change; a large dark area that remains fixed deserves closer review.
  3. Use more than one light. Spotlighting can exaggerate sparkle, while soft, diffuse light reveals broader brightness and contrast. Everyday room lighting is also informative.
  4. Change viewing distance. GIA notes that the observer’s head and shoulders contribute to bow-tie contrast, so the pattern can look stronger at close range.
