How are lab-grown diamonds made?

Two established processes are used to grow diamond crystals from a small diamond seed. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) uses a carbon-rich gas in a low-pressure chamber. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) uses high heat and pressure to reproduce conditions that support diamond growth. The resulting rough crystal is then cut and polished in much the same way as mined rough.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond, not a diamond simulant. Simulants such as cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials. “Lab-grown” describes the diamond’s origin and should be disclosed clearly; it does not mean the stone is plastic, glass or imitation diamond.

Can you see the difference?

Not reliably with the unaided eye. A well-cut lab-grown diamond and a mined diamond with comparable specifications can show the same brilliance, fire and scintillation. Inclusions or growth features can sometimes provide clues under magnification, but conclusive origin identification usually requires specialist equipment. A grading report and laser inscription, where supplied, are more dependable than visual guesswork.

Do the 4Cs still matter?

Yes. The 4Cs—cut, color, clarity and carat weight—remain useful for comparing diamonds of either origin.

  • Cut influences how efficiently a faceted diamond returns light and is often the most visible quality factor.
  • Color describes the presence or absence of body color on the grading scale used in the report.
  • Clarity considers internal inclusions and surface characteristics under controlled examination.
  • Carat measures weight, not face-up dimensions. Two diamonds of the same weight may look different in size because of their shape and proportions.

Shape is separate from cut grade. Round, oval, pear, emerald, radiant, marquise and princess are shapes; each creates a different visual proportion and style.

How grading reports work

A grading report records the characteristics observed by an independent gemological laboratory. Always check which laboratory issued the report, whether the report number can be verified online, and whether the report matches the stone being sold.

Price and resale considerations

Lab-grown diamonds generally cost less at initial purchase than mined diamonds with comparable specifications. That can let a buyer prioritize a larger visual size, higher grades or more budget for the setting. Prices in both markets change, so avoid treating a retail diamond purchase as a guaranteed investment.

Resale outcomes depend on demand, condition, documentation, the buyer and the channel used for resale. A mined diamond can also resell for substantially less than its original retail price. Choose a ring primarily for personal value, design and an affordable budget rather than a promised return.

What about sourcing and environmental claims?

Origin alone does not prove that one diamond has a lower environmental impact. Energy source, production efficiency, mining method, geography and supply-chain practices all affect the result. If sustainability matters to you, ask for specific, supportable information instead of relying on broad labels such as “eco-friendly” or “conflict-free.” Clear lab-grown disclosure is also important so that you know exactly what you are buying.

Which type of diamond should you choose?

A lab-grown diamond may suit you if you want diamond properties and appearance while maximizing size or specifications within a set initial budget. A mined diamond may suit you if natural geological origin, rarity or tradition is central to your decision. Neither preference is automatically right for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Do lab-grown diamonds become cloudy?

A diamond does not normally become cloudy simply because it was grown in a laboratory. Oil, lotion and everyday residue can reduce sparkle on either type of diamond; appropriate cleaning restores the surface appearance in most cases.

Are lab-grown diamonds graded?

Many are, but not every stone is accompanied by an independent report. Check the individual listing and verify the report number where documentation is stated.

Is a larger carat always better?

No. Carat is weight. Cut quality, dimensions, shape, setting proportions and your preferred look may matter more than weight alone.
